Recently, Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education had a press conference on fully implementing the CPC guidelines for education and promoting well-rounded development of students in terms of moral grounding, intellectual and physical ability, aesthetic sensibility, and work skills. It was learnt from the press conference that Jiangsu has formulated a 14th Five-Year Plan for Education in ten sections, they are: systemically fostering virtue in education, upgrading substance for fundamental education, promoting Linghang Program for Secondary Vocational Schools and Zhuoyue Program for Higher Vocational Schools, enhancing university development, bolstering postgraduate education quality, establishing a system for life-long study services, implementing the program for education talent magnet, enhancing smart education, increasing educational opening up, and reforming education evaluation system.
Fostering virtue in education was initiated to set up a batch of demonstration classes that integrate ideological and political education. Education on work skills aims to inspire and enable students to practice various fundamental work skills and act with frugality. Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education had orchestrated 500 lessons on ideology and politics at the online platform of Air Class by Famous Jiangsu Teachers, reaching out to over 7,000 primary and secondary schools across the province. Ge Daokai, head of Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education, said that education administrators at all levels are actively promoting the integration between ideological and political education via ways of pairing schools and encouraging joint lesson preparations.
At present, schools of various types have incorporated work skills in the whole journey of education, thus realizing at least one class hour per week for work skills among secondary and primary schools, at least 16 class hours per week among vocational schools, and at least 32 class hours per week for undergraduate students in universities plus one work skills week every academic year based on the conditions of localities where the universities are located. About 40% of education institutions in Jiangsu have established farms and gardens among other forms of practice platforms, 92 provincial experience centers among vocational schools for secondary and primary schools, and all work practices by students are incorporated as credits in evaluating students’ competency.
